Wright City man charged for threat

A Wright City man is facing felony harassment and stalking charges for a conflict that was reported in August.

Charges were filed Dec. 20 against Jeffrey R. Surtin, 35. Surtin allegedly threatened to burn down a home in a trailer park south of Wright City, along with other threats.

The incident was reported to the Warren County Sheriff’s Department Aug. 11, 2019, according to court documents. A resident of Point Maple Drive told deputies Surtin had been staying with her, but that they had a falling out.

The resident told deputies Surtin had threatened to burn down her home because she wouldn’t let him inside. The sheriff’s department said deputies then made contact with Surtin and told him to leave the woman alone.

Later that night, the sheriff’s department said deputies were contacted again by the same woman, who reported that Surtin had been sending her threatening messages. The messages allegedly said things like “I know where you are” and “Better stay away tonight ... Stay out (of) the house, other place ain’t safe either.”

The woman told deputies she was afraid she was in danger because of Surtin’s behavior.

Court records indicate Surtin has at least two prior charges for misdemeanor domestic assault, including a conviction in 2015.
