Marlene Wynn sentenced to 25 years in prison for 2018 murder

Marlene Wynn was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the 2018 murder of her mother, Mildred Brune.

In November she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action for the crime.

Wynn, 55, of Warrenton, was arrested in September 2018 after her 85-year-old mother, Mildred Brune, was found dead in her home on Cambridge Drive with severe head trauma and stab wounds.

The case was delayed for several years while Wynn underwent mental evaluations to determine whether she was fit to stand trial.

“We feel like it was a very just result, given the circumstances and the facts of the case,” said Warren County Prosecuting Attorney Hannah (Schweissguth) Dunakey. “And we’re always glad to dispose of a case with a very just outcome without having to expend the resources of a two week long jury trial.”

Prosecutors had originally planned to pursue charges of armed criminal action and murder in the first degree, although a week before her trial was set to start, Wynn came forward and said she wanted to accept responsibility and enter a guilty plea.

“Given the nature of the offense, given the nature of the underlying issues, we went ahead and allowed her to plead to murder in the second degree and an agreed upon sentence of 25 years,” said Assistant Prosecutor Rachel Smith.

Dunakey was pleased with the verdict and the way the case turned out as a whole and hoped the family was accepting of the outcome as well.

“We feel that it was well received by the family members as well, and that everybody felt like that was an appropriate outcome,” said Dunakey.
