Elijah Briggs pleads guilty to forgery, among other charges

Posted

Elijah Briggs, 42, of Warren County pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in stolen identities, 11 counts of forgery and one count of possession of a forging instrument on Dec. 5.

All charges are felonies.

Briggs was originally arrested by the Warren County Sheriff’s Department in 2021 and again in 2022 for forgery and trafficking in stolen identities according to previous Record reporting. At one point he was found with the personal identification information of over 80 people on his person.

According to previous Record reporting, Briggs was accused of obtaining checking account information and other personal information by stealing mail from people’s mailboxes from 2019-21. He then used that information to steal money and alter checks to make them payable to himself.

He was also indicted on federal charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, along with several other accomplices in Warren County.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of bank fraud and two counts of aggravated identity theft earlier this year in the U.S. District Court of St. Louis.

For his crimes in Warren County he was sentenced to nine years in prison, to be served concurrently with the nine years remaining on his federal charges.
