Warren County Sheriff's Deputy Ethan Dillon was patrolling State Highway M on Sept. 18 when he discovered Felipe Lopez, who had crashed a car into the ditch on the side of the road.
When questioning Lopez, 23, of Amarillo, Texas, Dillon found that the vehicle was not registered to Lopez, but instead to a nearby address.
According to the probable cause statement, another deputy responded to that address and determined that Lopez had stolen the vehicle.
The victim's wallet was also in the vehicle along with a firearm stored in the center console. Lopez said that he wandered onto the victim's property and found the keys on the porch when he stole the car, according to the probable cause statement.
The victim, however, reported that both his wallet and keys should have been inside his residence on a desk where they are always stored.
According to the probable cause statement, "Lopez stated he was unsure how he got the victim's wallet in his posession. Lopez stated he did not remember going inside the residence."
Lopez has been charged with burglary in the first degree, along with the stealing of a firearm, a motor vehicle and other property including the victim's wallet. All four charges are felonies.
According to a complaint filed in connection to the case, Lopez was also out on bond for an unrelated charge of tampering with a motor vehicle.
He is in custody and being held without bond.
