The Wright City Lady Wildcats were unable to sustain its hot start in a district quarterfinal round loss to Kirksville last week.
Wright City (10-16-2) lost to Kirksville in four sets in the Class 3, District 7 quarterfinal matchup. Wright City won the first set before dropping the final three sets in the match.
The Lady Wildcats won the opening set 25-17 to take an early lead.
“The first set I thought we played great together,” Wright City volleyball coach Christine Goldsmith said. “The team was excited and we were playing really smart. I think the key was using teamwork to our advantage and talking about everything.”
The Lady Wildcats fell 25-16 and 25-13 in the next two sets to fall behind 2-1 in the match. Goldsmith said the Lady Wildcats made errors in those two sets they do not normally make. She also believes Wright City got in their heads during those two sets.
Wright City led 24-23 in the fourth set and was one point away from pushing the match to a fifth set. Kirksville won three consecutive points to take the fourth set 26-24.
“In the last set, we played smart again and listened to one another,” Goldsmith said. “Unfortunately, when we got out of serving and had to receive, we lost the last few points to errors again and were not able to make it to the last game point.”
Wright City’s 10 wins this season are the most since 2019, when the Lady Wildcats won 12 games.
“I think they played well during the last game but could not pull out of the serve receive funk we got stuck in,” Goldsmith said. “It was a disappointing end to the season but they were a great team and I am happy to be able to coach these girls.”
Jasmin Simpson led the Lady Wildcats with 10 kills and seven blocks. Cayle Redmon finished second on the team with four kills and six blocks. Anna Sanford had three of the team’s seven aces. Sanford and Jessica Dunning each had eight assists in the match.
