Even though his score paced the Warrenton boys golf team in the Warriors’ home tournament April 10, senior Owen Thompson marveled at his teammates’ success over that of his own.
Playing in the Red Division of the 48th annual Warrenton Invitational at the Warrenton Golf Course, Thompson and his teammates tallied a score of 340 to place just behind St. Charles West (292) and Fort Zumwalt South (329).
Thompson’s 83 on the par-70 course was backed up by 85s from junior Ethan Leavitt and freshman Gavin Solari gave the Warriors three medalists as the trio finished 11th, and tied for 12th.
“It was nice to see multiple medalists on the team,” Thompson said. “I could see the progress they have been making every day in practice.”
Warrenton coach Aaron Jinkerson said that the top three finishers’ results, coupled with the efforts of freshmen Gavin Thompson (87) and Lucas Eskew (94) provided for a solid all-around effort from the young squad.
“I was really pleased with our scores because we had three golfers without a lot of varsity experience,” Jinkerson said. “I think their familiarity with the course helped their nerves and I was happy to see their success.”
While his younger players stepped up in a big tournament on their home course, Jinkerson said he got exactly what he’s come to expect from Owen Thompson, his leader.
“Owen was really happy with how he played,” Jinkerson said. “In events like this, I don’t get to see the guys play as much as I would like. He commented on how steady he was with pars and bogeys throughout the day. He said he was able to keep the ball in play on a consistent basis.”
Thompson said that he felt good about his play during the tournament because, unlike other times throughout the early spring, he didn’t have to pay too much attention to the external factors, which allowed him to focus on his game.
“I felt that the course was not playing too difficult,” Owen Thompson said. “The weather cooperated very well so there were good scoring conditions.”
Also in the Red Division, Wright City carded a team score of 426.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was junior Kye Schnarre (100). He was followed by senior Will Bohannon (101), junior Dustyn Bailey (109), Devin Meyers (116), and Landon Visico (120).
