All Micah Boeckman could feel when he learned he had been selected to the prestigious Missouri Scholars 100 program was shock. Not knowing the program existed, the Wright City senior is the district’s first student to be named as an honorable mention.
“To hear that I qualified for something that was pretty prestigious and that the school chose me for it was pretty cool,” Boeckman said.
The Missouri Scholars 100 program recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of the top 100 seniors, along with honorable mentions, across the state for their academic achievement.
Each student must meet the criteria of an “Academic Decathlon” which includes maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.75, achieving a minimum ACT score of 29 or SAT score of 1,600, being ranked in the upper 10% of their graduating class and taking high-level mathematics, science, English and foreign language classes.
Other exponents such as attendance, school activity involvement and citizenship are also taken into consideration.
“It’s kind of a boost for me to know the hard work and the time that I’ve put into growing my abilities educationally, as well as a leader, and some of those roles that I’ve stepped forward to within the school, have led to somewhere,” Boeckman said.
Boeckman is active in the Wright City’s FCA club and letters in varsity baseball. He was also recently named as a recipient of the Founders Scholarship from Hannibal-LaGrange University, where he plans to attend after graduation. Boeckman plans to major in business administration with a focus on entrepreneurship and management.
“It’s cool to see my work actually go to something other than just a GPA,” he said.
The program is also sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals. Boeckman was nominated by Wright City High School Principal Matt Brooks.
“We’ve only had a handful of kids that we could even put forth for the honor, so to receive the honorable mention level is a huge accomplishment,” Brooks said. “It’s a very small percentage to be in the consideration for the 100 or to be an honorable mention, so it’s a great accomplishment individually.”
Clark Mershon, Executive Director of the principals’ association, expressed, "The Missouri Scholars 100 Program is one of the premier academic recognition programs in the country. It is truly a celebration of learning. Students selected for this program have taken a rigorous course of study and maintained the highest academic standards. The Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals wants to celebrate the achievement and success of these students and their schools."
