Wright City R-II approves academic calendars for 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years

The Wright City R-II Board of Education unanimously (7-0)  approved the 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic calendars at their meeting on Feb. 20.

The board reviewed two options given by the calendar committee for both fiscal school years. For the 2025-26 school year, both options included 169 student contact days.

In “Draft Option A,” spring break would take place March 30-April 3. This will coincide with Easter Break on April 6. The last day of school would be May 21. “Draft Option B” placed Spring Break from March 23-27 and the last day of school would be on May 22.

After reviewing survey results where nearly 72% of staff preferred “Draft Option B”, the board voted in favor. This option will align Wright City with the Wentzville School District in terms of Spring Break.

Students will have 81 school days in the first semester and 88 days in the second semester.

For the 2026-27 school year, both options once again included 169 student days.

In “Draft Option A,” Spring Break would take place March 15-19, and the last day of school would be May 28. “Option B” placed Spring Break from March 22-26, which coincides with Easter Break and the last day of school on May 27.

Results were mixed, with 51.9% preferring “Option B” and 48.1% in favor of “Option A”. After recommending “Option B”, the board voted in favor.

The last day of school was pushed back later than usual due to Labor Day taking place on Sept. 7, and the district’s limitations to start school earlier.

Due to where Labor Day falls, students will have 76 days in the first semester and 93 in the second semester. board members expressed concern over the vast difference of days between both semesters, noting it is not ideal to have material taught in a short amount of time.

Due to the state legislature’s control over local school calendars, options were limited.

Bound by the state’s regulations, no school district can set its first day of school earlier than fourteen days prior to the first Monday in September.

The district wanted to avoid pushing second semester finals back any further and still needed to comply with state regulations.

The board approved the 76 days in the first semester of the 2026-27 school year.

They also voted to move the first day of school to a Monday. The district typically starts on a Tuesday but after 60% of staff were in favor of the change, the board agreed.

Starting on a Monday will be a full day and not a late start. This change will give staff an additional day of fall break, while students will have two more additional days.

For the next school year, the district will welcome students back on Aug. 18. In the 2026-27 year, students will be back on Aug. 24.
