World's Fair Program at the Warren County Historical Society

The Warren County Historical Society will be hosting a very interesting program on the insights of Laura Merritt's experiences at the 1904 World's Fair on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Warren County History Museum at 102 W Walton St. in Warrenton.

In August of 1904, a 19 year-old Iowan named Laura Merritt boarded a train headed south for a month at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, commonly known as the 190 World's Fair in St. Louis.

Along with Laura's story, a slideshow with brief Edison movie clips will take us inside the 1904 World's Fair to see things that were seen in the grand palaces by our ancestors 120 years ago. The images are from recently discovered 8x10 glass plate negatives that have been digitized. We will zoom in on details of what was exhibited at the fair, what was available for purchase and we will be entertained by the spelling horse: Jim Key.

Visitors to this event will see an Edison film clip of what many think is the Hotchie Kotchie dance along with the original recording of Meet me in St. Louis, Louis.

Program presenter, Karl Lindt, will also bring huge 12-foot panorama images of the whole fairgrounds with approximately 50 8x10 photos you can view. The historical society is excited to host this free program for all to enjoy.

Historical Society, Laura Merritt
