The GAC North conference recently named five Warrenton softball players to all-conference teams. Two Warriors were named to the first team – junior outfielder Makayla Witthaus and senior infielder Kiera Daniel. Daniel was also named as the 2024 GAC North Conference Player of the Year.
Leading the Warrenton offense, Daniel tallied 45 runs, 45 stolen bases and a .577 batting average.
Witthaus recorded 27 runs, four home runs, 32 RBIs this season and 68 outs in the field.
“Makayla is an incredible player all around the field. She is a very athletic girl that can play any spot on the field and she is more than willing to fill in wherever we need to make the team successful,” Head Coach Chad Berrey said.
Berrey noted that Witthaus played multiple positions this season, ranging from center field to third base to shortstop and catcher.
Senior outfielder Adee Morgan was named second-team all-conference. Morgan transitioned into manning center field towards the end of the season after some injuries caused displacement within positions. On offense, she had 12 runs and 23 RBIs. Berrey noted this was a breakout year for the senior offensively.
“She put the ball in play and put the pressure on the defense. She did a great job for us in the heart of our lineup,” Berrey said.
Junior infielder Audrey Lanzone was named to the second team. Lanzone stole 11 bases, recorded 15 runs and tallied 88 outs in the field.
“[Lanzone’s] stats and her postseason accolades don’t really display how good she is. I don’t think anybody on the team struck the ball as well as her throughout the season,” Berrey said. “She’s also another player that’s versatile that I can put anywhere.”
Freshman pitcher Hannah Gibson was also named to the second team. Gibson recorded 47 strikeouts in 22 games.
Berrey noted Gibson came into the season with a hurt back, but she was a “bulldog” of a player that pushed through her injury.
“For the next three years, she’s going to be an absolute stud. She might be one of the toughest kids I’ve had in the program. To have an injured back to the magnitude that she did, she did what she needed to do over the summer and really came into being a true varsity player,” Berrey said.
In addition, Daniel earned all-district first-team honors and first-team all region. Witthaus received first-team district honors and first-team all-region honors. Morgan earned first-team all-district, while Paige Campbell, Lanzone and Gibson made second-team all-district.
Daniel, Witthaus, Gibson, Morgan Marschel, Gracelyn Sitton, Audrey Skillman, Austin William, Paige Campbell and Rylee Cary all made the all-conference academic team.
