With a 34-29 loss in the Class 5, District 8 semifinals to Fort Zumwalt South, the Warrenton girls basketball Warriors season ended last week, finishing up the year with a record of 8-11.
Given everything the team had to endure, the season could be considered a relative success.
Head coach Greg Williams was pleased with the effort his team put forth.
“We were a heavy underdog and our kids played really hard and had a good chance at defeating the number one seed,” he said. “Garneisha Love led all scorers with 11 points. We struggled early offensively, but played really well defensively. We couldn't make the crucial plays at the end of the game.”
Despite a tough injury early in the year, the team managed to have a good year.
“The season was a pleasant surprise,” said Williams. “It was unfortunate that our only senior, Malea Payne, tore her ACL that ended her career in game three. But with COVID and other issues, we had a solid season.”
Looking ahead to next year, Williams is optimistic given the number of players he has coming back and more talent on the way.
“We return all of our players that finished the season,” he said. “We will have several young players joining our program that will make a significant impact.”
Williams believes his returning players will help a team that posted victories this season over Orchard Farm, Liberty Chrisitan Academy, Winfield, St. Charles (twice), Pacific, Winfield, and St. Charles West get even better.
“We should look for Garneisha Love, Audrey Payne, Dana Pruitt, Kaitlyn Haas, Kaelyn Meyer, Zoe Klaus, Kendall Taylor and Isabel Benke to improve from this past year,” he said.
Zumwalt South, the top seed, wound up losing 54-50 to No. 3 St. Dominic in the district title game on March 5. The Crusaders had advanced to the championship with a 50-38 win over No. 2 Zumwalt East.
St. Dominic was scheduled to face Whitfield in sectionals on March 10. The winner will advance to play either Cardinal Ritter or McCluer North in the quarterfinals on March 13.
