Warrenton board approves two change orders for Southwest Sewer Interceptor project

Posted

The city of Warrenotn will spend an additional $191,239 on the Southwest sewer interceptor project after two change orders were approved unanimously at the April 15 board of aldermen meeting.

The two change orders were for $30,082 for additional time and materials and another $161,157 for labor, materials and hauling to replace unsuitable soil discovered during the project.

Pace Construction was originally awarded the bid for the project at just under $2.6 million. After the change orders the cost of the project has increased to roughly $2.75 million.

The southwest interceptor project is a part of a larger effort to replace and update aging infrastructure as the city continues to grow.

According to Director of Operations Jon Struckhoff, the project is replacing the sewer main’s 18-inch clay pipe with more modern 24-inch HDP plastic pipe. Struckhoff had previously stated the newer pipe is more durable and the larger size will allow the city to more comfortably accommodate increased demands as the city’s population grows.

Struckhoff said the change order was divided into two parts since the costs were associated with different aspects of the project.

“The one is for some extra work that was done remaking the manholes that were not correct, and also a time extension,” said Struckhoff. “The larger one is for unsuitable soils they encountered when digging.”

The items in the first change order included additional pipe, and the cost for additional work associated with the demolition of a pump house and tank structure. The second change order covered the labor, hauling and materials that will be used to replace the unsuitable soil and continue with the project.

Residents may have noticed the project as it temporarily closed W. Main Street between E. Market Street and Highway U  in February as crews replaced the main under the road. Struckhoff said the project would impact the road again later this year with another closure planned further west on Main Street this summer.

According to the change order submitted by Pace Construction they expect to complete the project on June 30, barring any weather delays.
