The Warren County Record was honored with four awards in the Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Missouri Press Association and Missouri Press Foundation.
The awards were presented during a luncheon held Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Hotel Vandivort in Springfield.
The Record received two third-place awards in the “General Excellence” and “Best Overall Design” categories.
The Record competed against other newspapers across the state with a similar circulation size.
Former Editor Jason Koch received two awards for stories he wrote in 2023. He received a first-place plaque in the “Best Story About History” category about Carl Lutz, who served as a diplomat and saved thousands of peoples’ lives during the Holocaust and World War II. Lutz spent time in Warrenton at Central Wesleyan College about 20 years before the war began. Scenic Regional Library held a presentation about Lutz in November 2023.
Koch’s story, “Step back in time,” took second for “Best Story About Education.” The story was about Wright City Middle School students visiting a one-room school house in the Innsbrook historic village.
Record Publisher/Owner Tim Schmidt will continue serving on the Missouri Press Board of Directors in 2025. He is currently in his third year on the board.
Schmidt founded Westplex Media Group, which owns three other community newspapers in Montgomery City, Mexico and O’Fallon. He has owned The Record since 2019.
Peggy Scott, publisher of Leader Publications based in Festus, was elected president of the 2025 board. She will officially take office as MPA president Jan. 1.
