At halftime of the Wright City varsity football game with South Shelby Friday, three WCHS students won a contest to get the chance to kick a 30-yard field goal to win prize money.
Junior Seth Potter, 17, was the only kicker to sail the ball through the uprights to win $500 from First State Community Bank.
“I love playing football and I love kicking, I think I want to join the football team next year,” Potter said. “I kick all the time. I just aim for the middle (of the uprights) and that’s what I did there. As I saw it leave my foot, I knew it was going in.”
Potter said he planned to put the money into personal savings and use it for the future purchase of a motorcycle.
While Potter made his kick, the first two contestants who caught one of the three special white footballs of the 100 tossed into the crowd missed on their chances and received $100.
The pair was Johnny Sario-Perez, 15, and Christian Sario-Perez, 13.
“I thought I had it,” Johnny said. “So close, but so far away.”
