The Warrenton girls golf season came to an end on Oct. 11 during the Class 3, District 2 Tournament. The Warriors placed 12th overall as a team with a score of 509 on a par 71 course.
Despite not receiving the outcome they wanted, Head Coach Kelly Anderson noted the seniors enjoyed the moment and took it all in.
“When something comes to a closure, it’s always a little sentimental or emotional. They were really good about soaking in the experience and reflecting on everything that they had accomplished over the four years,” Anderson said.
While no one qualified for the state meet, Haley Rausch did achieve her goal of making all-conference by earning second-team honors this season.
Anderson noted Rausch’s scores were not quite where they needed to be going into the conference tournament, but she was able to fight back and pull through with a good score.
“She was pleasantly surprised because her expectation after not scoring as well as she could have throughout the season wasn’t there to make all-conference,” Anderson said. “Then, when she had a really good day on the course, it was nice to see her get that success after four years."
Four out of the five seniors have been with the program since they were freshmen. Anderson said that a couple of them showed up to their first practice without golf clubs, or had never swung a club before, but they grew tremendously.
Specifically, Anderson pointed out senior Jenna Marschel’s growth. Marschel set a goal to reach all-conference honors this year, but missed it by a scorecard playoff.
“For her to go from never swinging a golf club or playing to fighting for all-conference was a pretty cool thing,” Anderson said.
Overall, Marschel led Warrenton, placing 45th with a score of 117. Rausch placed 53rd with a score of 124. Lily Miles had a score of 128 and placed 58th. Charlee Woodside-Richardson placed 61st with a score of 140 and Sierra Foley placed 63rd with a score of 151.
While the season has come to an end, Anderson is feeling hopeful about the program’s future.
“My freshman really did put in a lot of work and they’re already talking about next season and the work they’re going to put in the off-season, which is a really good thing for a coach to hear,” Anderson said. “‘I’m excited about next year and it’ll be sad to see those seniors go, but I think we’ll be successful for the next few years with all these young kids."
