As of Nov. 1, Scenic Regional Library’s reciprocal cardholders will no longer be able to access Hoopla. The service offers over a million digital audiobooks, comics, manga, music, movies, TV and more. The decision was made to curb rising costs for the digital platform. Hoopla’s annual fee is based on usage, and many public libraries nationwide have struggled to afford the product.
Since Scenic Regional Libraries introduced Hoopla in 2015, the annual cost has skyrocketed from $15,000 to $106,000. Over the past year, over 41,000 items were checked out through the platform.
Reciprocal cardholders are residents of Heartland Regional, Missouri River Regional, St. Charles City-County, St. Louis County, Crawford County (excluding Sullivan) and Washington County library districts. The change will not impact any Washington residents, including those living in the Washington Public Library District, nor households that have purchased a Scenic Regional library card.
