Steven Woodson of North Carolina escaped from custody last night at the eastbound rest area on Interstate 70 in Wright City last night.
As of 3:30 p.m. the Wright City Police Department had no location for Woodson but was actively following leads, according to Lietenant Aaron Sutton. Sutton also reported this afternoon that they are now working in conjunction with the U.S. Marshalls Fugitive Task Force and other law enforcement agencies in the area including the Warren County Sheriff's Department and the Warrenton and Truesdale Police Departments to apprehend the fugitive.
Woodson was being transported back to prison in North Carolina from Nebraska where he was testifying in an assault case in which he was a victim, according to Sutton.
Woodson is 6-foot-2, bald, with a thin build. He was last seen on foot wearing a white shirt and black pants with one pair of handcuffs with both ends clasped on his left wrist.
A warrant has been issued for Woodson's arrest by the Warren County prosecuting attorney's office for escaping from custody. Citizens have been asked to call 911 if they see Woodson and not to approach him.
He was originally arrested in Orange County, North Carolina on charges of possession of a weapon by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest, violation of a protection order, two counts of breaking and entering and financial identity fraud.
