MoDOT awards Highway U repair project for just under $1.5 million

Posted

MoDOT awarded the contract for the expedited repairs of a landslide on Highway U to Karrenbrock Construction Inc, a construction company out of New Melle, for just under $1.5 million.

Highway U has been closed to traffic since May 9 for a mile and a quarter roughly 10 miles south of Warrenton when engineers first noticed the roadway shifting. Shortly after, three landslides on the road removed large parts of the road surface along with the adjoining hillside.

The repairs were first expected to be completed in spring of 2025 and have since been expedited with a projected completion date of Nov. 6 of this year thanks to efforts from elected officials in the area and landowner, Steve Kreps, who donated the land necessary for the right of way to complete the project.

MoDOT Area Engineer Jeff Niemeyer said that while Karrenbrock has been awarded the contract as the lowest of the 10 bids they received, the contract was not completely done and he was unsure of when construction would begin but he expected them to start “soon.”

He was also pleased with the number of offers they received.

“For a 10-day bid letting, that’s really good,” said Niemeyer.

There are also incentives and disincentives in that contract tied to the Nov. 6 completion date. Karrenbrock will have the opportunity to receive additional funds if they are able to complete the project early, although they will be charged if they are not on time.

Matt Auping, a project manager and estimator for Karrenbrock, said that they intended to begin on the date of the notice to proceed provided by MoDOT, Aug. 26, although he acknowledged that was dependent on the completion of the contract proceedings.

Auping was also confident that they would be able to meet the Nov. 6 deadline and he was optimistic that they may be able to complete the project ahead of schedule.

“We’re gonna shoot to do our best to get in before (Nov. 6,)” said Auping.

Niemeyer decided to once again express his appreciation to those who were able to help make this project possible on such a narrow timeline.

“I’m happy to see this going forward this year, we had great cooperation from our right of way folks,” said Niemeyer.
