The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the bid for the Warrenton to Wentzville section of the Improve I-70 project to the Improve I-70 Alliance Joint Venture at a press conference on Nov. 8.
The $600 million design-build project will widen Interstate 70 to three lanes from the intersection with Interstate 64 to the exit 191 interchange west of Warrenton.
The Improve I-70 Alliance Joint Venture is made up of Emery Sapp and Sons, Clarkson Construction, HNTB and Barlett and West.
“Today’s contractor selection of the Improve I-70 Alliance, … highlights MoDOT’s determination to continue to fulfill this generational opportunity to improve I-70, which serves as a critical east-west corridor across Missouri,” said MHTC Chairman Dustin Boatwright at the press conference.
Notable changes around Warren County will include the reconstruction of interchanges in Wright City and Foristell.
The interchange in Foristell at exit 203 will be completely rebuilt to include two separate bridges and roundabouts to manage traffic on entrance and exit ramps, according to renderings released by MoDOT.
The interchange in Wright City at exit 200 will also see extensive changes. Currently that interchange only has an entrance and an exit ramp on the east side and does not allow traffic to enter I-70 going west or to exit going east.
According to the renderings released by MoDOT, the Improve I-70 Alliance will make use of roundabouts here as well allowing traffic to enter and exit the interstate from both directions.
Improve I-70 East Project Director Kim Trainor also said at the press conference there would be improvements made to the Highway 47 interchange in Warrenton, although specifics were not provided.
Their design-build bid also includes the widening of I-70 to three lanes in both directions from exit 191 to the intersection of I-70 and I-64. It will also widen I-64 to three lanes in both directions from the interchange with Highway K in St. Charles County where it currently narrows to two lanes.
Their design will also realign I-70 at the railroad bridge in Wentzville and redesign the intersection with I-64.
Trainor said MoDOT would be holding community discussions about the project in spring of next year prior to the beginning of construction.
“This is really just the start, there’s a lot of work that still needs to happen,” said Trainor.
She communicated further that MoDOT will continue to provide updates on the project on its website at https://www.modot.org/improvei70/warrentonwentzville and the dates for those meetings would be available as soon as they were decided.
Construction is scheduled to begin on the project in spring of next year with an expected completion date in late 2028.
The project is just the second phase in a larger project to expand I-70 to three lanes in both directions statewide with a total price tag of $2.8 billion. The first phase of that project between Columbia and Kingdom City started construction earlier this year.
