Marthasville reverses decision to close two bridges

Posted

The Marthasville Board of Aldermen last week voted unanimously to reverse a decision it made last month to close two bridges on Two Street and Four Street.

The board had previously voted in September to close the two bridges in part because the bridges were constantly sustaining damage from vehicles hitting the corners of the bridges.

During the Oct. 21 meeting, Alderman Nicholas Lange, who was not present at the board’s September meeting, said he has received several complaints that the bridges are not accessible to residents.

“I don’t understand why we have them closed,” Lange said. “There is no engineering report that has been done here currently by the city that says the bridges are not safe to vehicular traffic.”

Lange said the two bridges are in much better shape than another bridge they recently did improvements on.

“Bridges should still be open to vehicular traffic until an engineer or someone says they are not safe,” Lange added.

Lange said he wouldn’t spend a dime on temporary bollards or planters to block the bridges as had been discussed at the September meeting.

This led to some discussion about having the Missouri Department of Transportation inspecting the bridges to make sure they were sound.

After some more discussion on the issue, the board voted 4-0 to reverse their previous decision to close the bridges.
