Marthasville man facing charges following police chase

Posted

A Warren County man is facing multiple criminal charges after leading a sheriff’s deputy on a chase early Thursday morning, Oct. 29, according to online court records.

The deputy was on patrol at 1:23 a.m. near the intersection of Highway 94 and Highway TT when he saw a black Nissan vehicle pass by with no license plate lights.

A check of the vehicle’s Missouri license plate found it was not on file with the state, according to a probable cause statement, so the deputy attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle as it headed north on TT near Sydenstricker Nobbe.

The vehicle did not brake or pull over in response to the deputy’s lights and sirens, according to the statement. At one point the deputy saw the suspect, later identified as Curtis Smothers, “stick his arm and head out of the driver’s side window and begin waving his arms, and then proceeded to accelerate,” it notes.

The vehicle allegedly fled at speeds reaching approximately 100 mph in a posted 55 mph zone. It eventually came to a stop, though, near the intersection of Sherwood Meadows Circle and Borgmann Road, not far from the Lake Sherwood Estates address listed for Smothers in online court records, also listed as a Marthasville address. The deputy ordered Smothers out of the vehicle at gunpoint.

Smothers, born in 2006, has been charged with felony aggravated fleeing a stop or detention, along with misdemeanors including driving while revoked, failure to register a motor vehicle and failure to maintain insurance. He is being held without bond at the Warren County Jail.
