The Warrenton Warriors are not finished.
After defeating West Plains 28-24 on the Zizzers’ home turf in the Class 4 State Quarterfinal game, the Warriors are moving on to the final four.
Starting in the first quarter, Warrenton came out with a big play after recovering an onside kick on the first play of the game. The Warriors and Zizzers went back and forth until the last two minutes of the first quarter, and West Plains broke through and kicked a seven-yard field goal to put them up 3-0.
Brandon Johnson responded for the Warriors in the second quarter and rushed for a 15-yard touchdown to put Warrenton in the lead 6-3. Shortly after, West Plains threw for an 11-yard touchdown.
With about five minutes left in the first half, Johnson threw a deep pass to Mason Thompson which put the Warriors on the 24-yard line. Austin Haas finished the play and ran for a five-yard touchdown. Then, Johnson ran for a two-point conversion. Warrenton put themselves in the lead once again and ended halftime up 14-10.
Opening the second half, Javon Jones quickly put another six points up for the Warriors on a 16-yard run.
The Zizzers responded and scored their last touchdown of the season in the third quarter on a two-yard run. The Warriors were down 24-21 as they headed into the final 12 minutes of the game.
Despite being down and three hours away from home, the Warriors’ resilience shined through in the fourth quarter. Austin White came up with a big play after catching a 30-yard touchdown pass from Johnson with nine minutes left to play. This play put the Warriors back in the lead 28-24.
With plenty of game left to play, the Warrenton defense came up with a momentum shifting stop to completely shut down the Zizzers and put the Warriors’ offense on the 25-yard line.
Haas carried the ball all the way to the five-yard line and Johnson took a knee as the clock ran down and the Warriors could feel the victory in their hands.
The Warrenton Warriors are not done, and they will head into the final four to take on Festus.
