School board votes to add six classrooms, increasing project cost by $1.1 million

The progress on the new Daniel Boone Elementary School construction project in the Warren County R-III School District is flying along.

According to Matt McDermott, project manager at Hoener Architects, the new property at the corner of Ash Road and Highway 47 is ahead of the proposed completion schedule

In a presentation given to the R-III School Board on October 9, McDermott praised the workers for the expediency of the project.

“They are ahead of schedule,” McDermott said. “Contractually, the substantial completion was in November and the final was in December. They are ahead of schedule, and they are in a July/August time frame for finishing up this building. The way they are managing it, they are rocking and rolling with this project.”

Daniel Boone Elementary, which is currently located at 813 Vosholl Avenue, will move to the new location when construction is complete.

The new location is approximately three miles north of the current school site off Highway 47.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, the board unanimously approved a change order for the project, which will add six new classrooms to the property at a cost increase of $1,167,500.36, bringing the total project cost to $35,229,064.61.

McDermott presented a series of images to the assembled body, among which chronicled the current state of the south classroom wing corridor and its HVAC system and wall framing, the toilet and plumbing subgrade near the cafeteria space, the ramp walls that access the music room and the back of the stage and the interior/exterior of the gymnasium/storm shelter.

He added that electrical service is beginning to mobilize and that work should begin this week, and that gas work is also progressing with the completion of easements in order to get gas to the property.

“That’s good news,” McDermott said. “Three of the main (building entities) are (progressing). We’re waiting on MODOT (for road work), and we’re keeping our fingers crossed. We’re real pleased. The crew out there for GS&S (Construction) is doing a great job.”

R-III Superintendent Dr. Gregg Klinginsmith said that the district can’t help but be excited by what Hoener, GS&S and the subcontractors have accomplished on several levels.

“I’m really pleased with the way the project is going along,” Klinginsmith said. “GS&S has been a great general contractor, and our subs (subcontractors) have all been wonderful. We’ve had a lot of local folks working on the job, and I appreciate all the time they’re putting in. I appreciate everyone’s time and effort on the project. I’m glad to see it.”
