The Wright City High School track and field team turned in a strong performance at the Eastern Missouri Conference championship meet on May 2 at Montgomery County High School.The Wildcats brought home four conference championships and earned medals in numerous events in both boys and girls divisions.All four conference championships came from the boys team. It captured first place in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay. Kaden Cross and Seth Leander Potter were two individuals who were named conference champions in two events.
Cross sprinted to victories in both the 100-meter dash (11.91 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (23.62 seconds), the latter of which was a new personal record. The accolades did not stop there for Cross, as he was named the EMO conference male sprinter of the year. Potter also claimed two first-place medals, winning the 400-meter dash in 52.84 seconds and teaming up with Joshua Harris, Andrew Staats and Terrance Love to win the 4x400-meter relay in 3:41.05, also setting a team personal record.
Wright City had numerous top three finishes.
For the girls team, senior Lydia Clubb turned in a four-medal performance. She placed third in the 100-meter dash (13.84) and the 800-meter run (1:01.94). She also helped the 4x200 – which also included Ada Ferrell, Jolee Lockhart and Lindsay Pettus – place second with a season-best 1:53.80 and the 4x400 – which also included Ferrell, Pettus and Sadie Sehnert – come in third with a 4:29.79.
Pettus also picked up an individual medal, finishing third in the 800-meter run (2:40.96).
In the field events, Wright City added two more medals on the girls side. Sehnert earned third place in the javelin in 32.36 meters, while Joshlyn Hawn finished third in the discus throw with a personal-record 29.5 meters.
Three other boys relay teams earned medals. The 4x200-meter relay team of Cross, Potter, Kayden Allison and Dayton Humphreys placed second with a season-best 1:36.62, the 4x100-meter team of Allison, Cross, Humphreys and Duan McRoberts finished third in 46.34 seconds and the 4x800 team of James Guinn, Staats, Love and Matthew Johnston came in fourth in 10:20.55.
Other medalists were Madison Goodman (sixth, high jump, 1.4 meters), Hawn (fifth, shot put, 8.94 meters), Sehnert (sixth, shot put, 8.53 meters), Staats (fifth, 800, 2:14.21) and Guinn (sixth, 3,200, 11:38.61).
Overall, the Wright City boys placed fifth with 68 points, while the girls finished seventh with 58 points. Both teams will compete in the Class 3, District 3 meet on May 10 in Owensville.
