After losing seven seniors, the Wright City boys basketball team looks a lot different this year, with eight or nine players new to the varsity level.
“We don’t have the depth that we had last year. I’m bringing up probably three or so sophomores to play on the varsity team, but I think for the most part we’ll be fine,” Head Coach Ken Brown said. “We’re bringing back a couple of kids that played a significant role last year, so I think we have enough to fill the void from the holes they left.”
The Wildcats return Duan McRoberts, Grant Lehmen, Jersiah Higgins, Kyle Schnarre and Hunter Bohannan, and welcome freshman Kaveon Schulte.
McRoberts earned Eastern Missouri Conference second-team honors as a junior.
“Everyone hears that name a lot, but he’s a really good player. He controls everything from an offensive standpoint,” Brown said.
In addition to McRoberts, Brown will be looking towards a couple players that are new to the varisty level to step up, as well as some key returners.
Last season, the Wildcats finished with a 11-15 record and a first round district loss to St. Charles West.
“Our goal is to just be better than last year to get a good chance at winning a district game. We haven’t done that in a while, so we’re looking forward to that,” Brown said.
Brown noted the energy has been up since practices have started and they have been working on fundamentals and getting back into the swing of things.
“This week in particular we’re working on the kinks, getting our bodies ready and in basketball shape,” Brown said. “It’s a little different dynamic this year, because last year I had a bunch of kids that didn’t play football on the team and now I have everyone that plays football on the team.”
After last season, Brown is looking to have a well-rounded season from start to finish.
“Last year, we had a good start, but then we had a long period right around January where we just weren’t playing basketball well,” Brown said. “I’m going to challenge my team to continue playing at a high level no matter the opponent. The only thing that changes is our opponent, not our play and not our energy, so I think if we can maintain that, we’ll be okay.”
The Wildcats will start their season on Nov. 22 at North Country Christian starting at 6:30 p.m.
