Wright City Track Takes Third at EMO Meet

The Wright City track team left the Eastern Missouri Conference team with a pair of third-place finishes on Tuesday.“These kids are so excited about their personal bests,” said Coach Sue Wright. “Even kids that didn’t medal got their personal bests, and that’s what’s important.”Senior Brittany McPike guided the girls’ scoring, placing first in both the shot put and discus throw. Her efforts earned the honor of being named All-EMO thrower.“She’d worked extremely hard What a way to cap your senior year with a conference championship,” said Wright. “I can’t say enough about her work ethic and guidance for the other kids.”But she wasn’t alone in her success, as Jynna Fritz showed tremendously well in the running events. She took first in the mile, while finishing second in the 800-meter race, to be named All-EMO middle distance runner.“She really ran well and looked strong,” said Wright.Fritz was also a part of the 1,600-meter relay team, including Sam Benson, Karlee Pelton and Abbie Ogborn, that placed second.Additionally, she joined Courtney Lawson, Erin Tomschin and Amber Schulte for a third-place finish in the 3,200-meter race.Individually, Tomschin claimed fourth in the mile and third in the two-mile race, while Lawson finished fourth in the two mile.Wright City was also able to earn points from its field events beyond McPike, with Rachell Phillips placing sixth in the triple jump and Holli Minzes placing sixth in the shot put.The Wildcats’ sprint relays, consisting of Janee Hill, Abbie Ogborn, Karlee Pelton and Amy Janowski, each took sixth place.On the boys’ side, Ben Randolph again led the way with a first-place finish in the 800-meter race. He also helped guid the 3,200-meter relay team, consisting of Nick Mueller, Cody Klemp and Brendan Geier, to a second-place finish.Randolph, who broke the school’s 400-meter record with a time of 51.5 seconds on Saturday at the Battle Invitational, was named All-EMO middle distance runner.“He has worked extremely hard and done an outstanding job for us,” said Wright. “I couldn’t be more excited for him, having gotten the record and being named the best in the conference for his events.”In the hurdling events, Kody Morgan was again strong, placing third in both the 110- and 300-meter races.Alvin Chenoweth took third place in the 400-meter race, while Nick Mueller finishing fourth.The 400-meter relay team, consisting of Javier Gonzalez, Gary Meyer, Chenoweth and Geier, placed second.The 800-meter relay crew, consisting of Lupe Quintanar, Gonzalez, Meyer and Geier, took third.Additionally, Klemp placed fifth in the mile, while Richard Liddell took fifth in the 800-meter race.Wright City garnered several points from Christian Thompson, who competed in four events. He placed fifth in both the shot put and discus, while taking sixth in the triple and long jump.The Wildcats are now off until the district meet on May 17.“We’re doing the right things now and getting our personal bests,” said Wright. “Its going to be nice to get some practices over the next week.”FRITZ NAMED ALL-EMODerrick Forsythe Photo.
