Candidates for the Wright City R-II School Board and the Wright City Board of Aldermen will address the public and answer questions during a March 22 candidate night at Wright City Middle School.

The annual Meet The Candidate Night, hosted by the Wright City Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held in the middle school's cafeteria. Doors open to the public at 6 p.m.  The school is located at 100 Bell Road in Wright City.

The event is a time for area residents to share their questions and get information from the people running for local elections. Elections for local offices will be held on April 4, with early/absentee voting already underway.

There are two contested elections in Wright City this year:

  • Three seats on the Wright City R-II School Board are up for grabs, with five people competing for the positions. Only one of the candidates, Heidi Hallemann, is a current board member; the other four would all be new to office. Candidates Frank Zykan and Beth Dean are making their second attempt at election after falling short last year, while Monica Hepperman and Kyle Lewis are running for the first time.
  • Two people are competing for a two-year term on the Wright City Board of Aldermen, representing Ward 1 (the northern ward). Incumbent Don Andrews is running for re-election, challenged by resident Susan Traylor.
  • Depending on which city government officials are present at Meet The Candidate Night, local residents may also have a chance to ask for more information about a 1-percent sales tax increase being proposed by the city government. City officials estimate the tax would generate an extra $500,000 annually, half of which would be used to fix a persistent budget deficit, while the other half goes toward infrastructure projects.
