Wright City replacing city hall roof

A new roof will be the first major outward sign of renovation at the building that will become the new Wright City City Hall. The Wright City Board of Aldermen approved a $26,400 bid from Baumstark Roofing to do the work. Baumstark was the low bidder; the only other bid, from Allen Roofing, was $37,800. The bids were considered during the board of aldermen’s regular meeting Aug. 10.“They are projecting that they will get the roof on before the end of September, weather permitting,” said Jim Schuchmann, renovation project manager. The work will be the first highly visible step of renovating the former Assembly of God Church on Westwoods Road to be used as the new city hall. Schuchmann and a small team have been doing demolition on the interior of the building since May, which is nearly complete, he said.Once the new roof is in place, Schuchmann said the building will be secured against the elements and ready for new material to be installed in the interior.Replacing the roof on the building was originally included in a number of contractor project bids the board of aldermen rejected in May. The lowest of those bids was over $2 million, more than twice what the city has budgeted for the project, which also includes a new baseball park and renovation of the existing city hall for police use.Schuchmann predicted that updated architectural plans for the project will be ready for the Aug. 24 board of aldermen meeting. When those plans are sent out for new bids, Schuchmann said he will ask contractors to provide a more detailed itemization of costs, so the city can identify ways to reduce the cost of the project if it is still too high.Mayor Dan Rowden praised Schuchmann for the work he has done over the past four months.Mr. Schuchmann has been working diligently in that building to prep it and to save us a lot of money,” Rowden said.“The original bids that were submitted to us, the prices were going to be astronomical.”Schuchmann doing the demolition himself, rather than the city paying a contractor to do it, saved a lot of money, Rowden said.Roof
