The Wright City R-II Board of Education unanimously (7-0) approved a greenhouse bid of $428,708.75 from MTI Greenhouse on Feb. 20.
The greenhouse will be constructed at the new high school that opened up this semester. Construction is estimated to start on May 19 and finish on Aug. 1.
“MTI Greenhouse is a company that has the ability to take responsibility for managing and completing the entire construction process including design, engineering, procurement, and construction phases, essentially handling all aspects of the project from start to finish,” Assistant Superintendent Jeremy Way wrote in a statement to the board.
Money to pay for the greenhouse will be allocated from grants. Agriculture teacher Kelsey Kemry and CFO Veronica Klaus are currently working to receive a grant for the project.
Money that was set aside for the new high school will also be used. Things such as microwaves and refrigerators were bought with this money, and the district noted they have a leftover sum.
Fund four will also pay for the greenhouse if needed. Way estimates around $100,000 will be pulled from the fund. However, this number will be determined after a grant is received.
Fund four are federal aid funds that are administered by the U.S. Department of Education through aid programs.
The district was hoping to receive two bids for the project, but only received one from MTI Greenhouse. They were in discussion with Hummert’s but did not receive a bid.
The district noted they did expect a quoted bid around this price point and MTI has worked with nearby districts such as Orchard Farm and Hillsboro.
