As the beginning of the new school year kicked off earlier this week, the Wright City R-II School District held their all-staff convocation and “State of the District” Address on Aug. 16 which was led by the new Superintendent Dr. Amy Salvo.
Staff began the day with breakfast while catching up with colleagues about their summer break. Shortly after, everyone met in the gym and Salvo gave her speech.
Salvo started by thanking countless people and recognizing Wright City alumni that were in the room. She then went on to give the staff an impactful speech about their “why” and why they choose to be in education.
While most of the staff knew what their “why” was, or rather who their "why” is, Salvo asked everyone to turn to a partner and tell them about their favorite teacher.
“I’m going to go out on an assumption that when you shared your favorite teacher, your favorite educator, it had nothing to do with books. It had nothing to do with technology. But many of you probably said they encouraged me. They supported me. They believed in me when I felt no one else did,” Salvo said.
Salvo went on to stress the importance of how impactful an educator can be in a student’s life and how taking a moment to say hello to a student in the hallway that might be having a hard day can possibly have more of an impact than they would ever know.
Then, the annual theme of the school year was announced, which is “Every Student, Every Day." This is what Salvo described as her “why.”
“So, I challenge you this year, for the kids that are in your class, for the kids that aren’t in your class…I ask that you reach out to them. You can be that difference maker,” Salvo said.
After some technical difficulties, a few scattered laughs while watching a YouTube video of Kid President, running around the gym to check under the chairs for potential prizes and a quick jam session to “Celebration” by Kool and The Gang, yearly service pins were handed out and the highly competitive building competition began.
Staff split up into their respective schools, while the Wright City cheer team joined to teach the staff a cheer. The staff had 20 minutes to memorize the routine and add their own pizazz to the dance before they performed for the judges.
Staff showed off their cartwheels, splits, pyramids, jump splits and more. After deliberating, Salvo awarded the Wright City High School staff the spirit trophy and the day concluded.
