The Wright City R-2 School District celebrated Red Ribbon Week in a variety of ways to end the month of October.Wright City East and West Elementary schools held a number of special events and themed days to bring awareness to the student body and motivate them to get involved.Sponsored by the National Family Partnership, Red Ribbon Week has been in existence since 1985 and is focused on promoting drug awareness. The pledge of the foundation is to help children grow up safe, healthy and drug free.“Healthy kids are able to grow to their potential,” said Superintendent David Buck. “That is why we have a backpack and lunch buddy program and other initiatives like Care to Learn and SADD. It’s a big reason we celebrate Red Ribbon Week with such vigor.”At West Elementary, students held a food drive for Operation Food Search, collecting 4,423 items. The event fundraiser concluded with faculty members having to kiss pigs brought in by the Schnarre family. In addition, West also hosted a curriculum reading night.Students at Wright City East Elementary also took part in the food drive, with the winning classroom being awarded ice cream with the counselor. There were different themed days, in which students were encouraged to dress accordingly. Among them was “Follow your dreams, and be drug free,” where students wore pajamas. Other days they wore sports jerseys, boots or workout clothes. Each day students recited the Red Ribbon Week pledge immediately after reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.Last week students at Wright City Middle School enjoyed getting dirty for a cause, as they celebrated the results of a Care to Learn fundraising drive. Students raised $1,400 through the challenge, and the winning teams were awarded the opportunity to pie and whip cream the last-place fund-raisers.In general, the district focused on raising awareness of the dangers of drugs and alcohol and the importance of being healthy and recognizing the needs of others.“Our kids are precious,” added Buck. “Instilling healthy choices in them is paramount.Red Ribbon Week
