Wright City Police Chief Tom Canavan reported last week that St. Charles-area police resources are assisting in the investigation into a group of people who used a stolen car to ram through the doors of Osage County Guns, ransacked the store and then made a speedy getaway.
The theft occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Sept. 3, involving a group of people who stole as much as they could in a very short time, then fled in one or more other vehicles before police arrived.
On Sept. 8, Canavan told city elected leaders that Wright City detectives had collected evidence from the break-in and shipped it the St. Charles County Crime Lab.
“The crime lab is making this a priority. They’re working very quickly processing prints, comparing them with crime scenes in St. Peters and elsewhere,” Canavan commented. He added that he has also been in communication with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (AFT) and a multi-jurisdictional police task force in St. Charles County.
“I don’t want to say too much about (the investigation) at this time, but everyone is doing everything they possibly can at this point. Hopefully we’ll get some good news in a week or so,” Canavan said.
The chief added that police officers had a commendable response time to the break in, despite the fact that the thieves were in and out so quickly that they escaped before officers arrived. After being dispatched by 911 operators, the first officer was at the gun store in less than a minute, Canavan said.
City officials also noted that Osage County Guns is taking action to guard against similar break-ins. The store has placed large concrete blocks outside its main doors in order to block vehicles.
