The Wright City girls wrestling team is off to an exciting start in the 2025 season after having two top-10 team finishes. In the Lafayette ‘Fred Ross’ Invitational, the team placed seventh on Jan. 11.
Most recently, the Wildcats had a fifth-place finish at the St. Charles Invitational and placed higher than 25 teams on Jan. 18.
Out of the eight wrestlers, six placed in the top five of their respective weight classes.
Leading the way for Wright City, Caelyn Hanff (27-3) walked her way to a first-place finish in the 170-pound weight class and reached her 100th career win.
She defeated three of her four opponents in the first period. In the championship match, Hanff won by fall over Granite City’s Demi Barnes.
Kali Jensen (18-6) and Sadie Sehnert (29-4) also found success over the weekend and placed second.
Jensen, who competed in the 115-class, won three out of her four matches. In the quarterfinals, Jensen quickly won by fall over Benton’s Landyn Gabler in 17 seconds. She eventually fell in the championship match after two rounds against Troy Buchanan’s Haddley Dale.
Sehnert competed in the 135-class and also won her first three matches. In the title match, Sehnert lost a 16-5 major decision to Parkway Central’s Erin Delling.
At 145, Lauren Ritter (16-10) rallied back to earn the third-place medal after suffering a loss early on in the quarterfinals and being sent to the consolation bracket. She won four of her five matches In the third-place match, Ritter and North Point’s Faith Hall (20-13) grappled for three rounds and were both tied at the end of regulation.
In the first overtime, Ritter won by sudden victory and claimed the medal.
In addition, Rebekah Riggs (15-10) and Lilliana Wiedemeier (22-12) placed fifth at 125 and 130, respectively.
The Wright City boys wrestling team also participated in the St. Charles Invitational. As a team, the Wildcats placed 22nd.
Quincy Rice (16-8) was the lone Wildcat to place. Competing at 215, he finished fourth in the second biggest bracket of the tournament, which comprised 24 wrestlers. Rice had one bye, four wins and two losses.
