The Wright City football team found itself at a disadvantage before ever stepping onto the field during Week Three. The Wildcats fell to 0-3, outmatched on the line during a 43-14 loss at Montgomery County.Their offensive struggles continued, with a one-dimensional approach resulting in just two late scores.Meanwhile, Montgomery County was able to capitalize on the mismatch, showcasing its passing attack with efficiency.“Physically, it was tough for us to match up with their size,” said Coach Matt Brooks.Montgomery County needed just three plays to score on its opening drive, using a short fade pass to go ahead 7-0.Another successful pass play put the hosts ahead 14-0, and by the end of the first quarter Montgomery County led by three touchdowns.Wright City was able to slow the opposition’s progress in the second quarter, but Montgomery County still booted a pair of field goals to go ahead 27-0 at halftime.“They had a lot of success with their offense, and we didn’t have an answer,” said Brooks.Wright City kept the ball on the ground, finally generating success in the second half. But Montgomery County continued to wear on the Wildcats’ defense, scoring another pair of touchdowns and forcing a safety.“They were able to beat us with their jetsweep and perimeter,” said Brooks.Wright City finally put itself on the board in the fourth quarter, when Austin Buchheit scored on a 12-yard run, and Steven Soltysiak tacked on the two-point conversion.“We were able to get some things going late, once substitutions were made,” said Brooks.Sophomore Kyle Tuepker, who is splitting snaps at quarterback with Kyle Lang, scored the second touchdown on a short run.“Tuepker played the last two series for us, and we’re trying to get him some snaps looking down the road,” said Brooks. For a team that is still searching for its first win, the small victories are having to count in the interim.“Even though it was against their reserves, the fact we were able to get on the board and get some offense going was a positive,” said Brooks. “The big theme has been to keep moving forward.”The Wildcats’ passing success was limited, with Soltysiak hauling in three catches for 13 yards and Ben Randolph snagging a pair of receptions for 39 yards.Wright City amassed 89 total yards on the ground, led by Buchheit’s 40 yards on seven carries.Soltysiak rushed six times for 36 yards, while Lamone Davis had 17 yards on seven carries.Lang went five of 15 passing for 55 yards, while Tuepker completed two of three passes for 39 yards.
Wright City senior Ben Randolph hauled in a pair of catches during the Wildcats' defeat last Friday.
