After conceding a tough 52-26 loss to Winfield (5-4) on Jan. 16, Head Coach Dustin Elledge has a plethora of things he is hoping the Wright City girls basketball team will improve on as they move further into the season.
Rebounding, shooting and a good mentality were the three things Elledge took note of after the loss.
“I think the big thing is better effort, getting better on rebounding the ball. We had a hard night on the shooting aspect of it and didn’t get a lot of shots to fall,” Elledge said. “But we just need to put that behind us and go for the next possession.”
The Wildcats were down at the end of each quarter (21-8, 28-14, 42-20). They now hold a 4-7 overall record.
Wright City had limited the Warriors to only seven and 10 points in the second and fourth quarter, but could not generate enough shots and rebounds.
“They easily rebounded us two to one, if not more. You know, giving them three, four opportunities on the offensive end hurts us, and when we shoot one and done, that hurts us as well,” Elledge said.
Shiriah McRoberts and Ada Ferrell collected the bulk of Wright City’s points, with McRoberts earning 11 and Ferrell with eight.
Regardless of the rebounding and shooting aspects of the game, Elledge left his team with one takeaway after the game, “We all need to work on team chemistry.”
This is what Elledge believes will help motivate his team after a tough loss.
He went on to say there needs to be a better bond and he wants to see them pick each other up, which in return will add to success on the court in future games.
Since dropping their game to the Warriors, the Wildcats have rallied back with a 41-35 against Christian Fellowship on Jan. 17, just a day after playing Winfield.
Against the Knights, Zoe Mitchell and Ferrell both tallied seven rebounds and three steals. In addition, Mitchell had three blocks. McRoberts led again in points with 11 and Alyvia Mikus shot for two three-pointers.
Wright City will travel to Montgomery County for an EMO conference matchup on Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
