The Wright City Wildcats were unable to overcome an early deficit in their loss to Mark Twain Tuesday night.

Wright City (2-15) fell to Mark Twain 58-46 in a home conference matchup. Sophomore Duan McRoberts led the Wildcats in scoring, finishing with 10 points.

The Wildcats fell behind early and trailed 21-11 after the first quarter. The teams played an even second quarter and Wright City trailed 29-19 at halftime. The Tigers scored on multiple second chance points early in the game to build a double-digit lead.

“They’re a really good rebounding team,” Wright City boys basketball coach Ken Brown said. “They’re kind of tall but they’re just long and athletic. At the four and five spots, they’re very good at getting offensive rebounds. That’s what kind of killed us at the end. We’ve just got to do a better job of getting in there and trying to do the dirty work and box the kids out.”

Carle’on Jones scored a basket on the first possession of the third quarter to pull the Wildcats within eight points. Justin Jones hit one free throw on the next possession to trim the Tiger lead to seven points. McRoberts scored after Mark Twain stretched the lead back to nine points to trim the deficit to seven at 31-24. After Carle’on Jones picked up his fourth foul just over three minutes into the quarter, Mark Twain outscored Wright City 14-6 the remainder of the quarter.

“I think defensively, we put together a string of four to five stops,” Brown said. “It just wasn’t happening at the offensive end. Just couldn’t make shots. We had several layup opportunities where we weren’t able to make it that would have changed the tide of the game.”

Wright City was unable to pull closer than 12 points in the fourth quarter in the loss.

Brown conceded second half foul trouble impacted playing time and his player rotations in the game. Several Wildcats battled foul trouble late in the game, with multiple players finishing the game with four fouls.

“It’s always unfortunate when we foul a lot but that’s what we do sometimes,” Brown said. “We’re battling hard. We’re kind of undersized down there so we’re battling to get the rebounds. I think the kids played hard and that’s all I can ask from them.”

Wright City is scheduled to play at Silex Friday. They will host North Callaway at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
