Before the Wright City baseball season had started, the senior class of Micah Boeckman, Drew Elsenrath, Duan McRoberts and Jake Orf made it a goal to win a district championship.
Two months later, that same goal remains.
The Wildcats will play Winfield in a Class 4, District 8 quarterfinal game at 1 p.m. on May 17 at Southern Boone High School. The winner will play Tolton Catholic in the semifinals at 5 p.m. on May 20.
“We’re prepared and we’re ready,” Elsenrath said. “We’re hot right now. We’re firing on all cylinders,” Boeckman added.
Wright City drew the No. 4 seed and Winfield is seeded fifth. Although the Wildcats defeated the Warriors 12-4 in the last meeting on March 21, they know that Winfield will be a much tougher opponent than it was two months ago.
“We were able to see some of their weaknesses and they were able to see some of ours,” Boeckman said. “It gives us an eye on what they might have and how we can prepare against it.”
Elsenrath noted that facing Winfield a second time can be both a blessing and a challenge, while coach Cody Bair added it will be a different ballgame.
“It doesn’t matter what the score was at the beginning of the year. We can’t look that we beat them before and take that for granted,” Bair said. “It’s going to be a new ball game and a new team.”
The seniors will look to help the Wildcats pick up their first district win since their freshman year. Wright City was eliminated in its first round of districts the past two year.s
Wright City will head into districts on a high note. As on May 12, the Wildcats have won nine of their last 10 games, outscoring their opponents 120-26.
“We just got to keep putting in the work in practice and compete every day and put in good wins,” Orf said.
“We have to play together, play clean and always battle for each other,” McRoberts added.
Bair emphasized the importance of focusing on the minnout details in order to find success in a district tournament that includes top-seeded Tolton Catholic, second-seeded Fulton and third-seeded Southern Boone.
“We’re playing in a really good district,” Bair said. “When you put the little things together, they amount to big things. If we can do that, I think we’ll be in a good position.”
