By Tim SchmidtRecord Managing EditorWright City has been awarded a $191,760 grant to build sidewalks on two streets. The grant was awarded by MoDOT through its Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).New sidewalks will be constructed on Bell Road between Westwoods Road and the North Service Road, and on Wildcat Drive between Westwoods Road and the North Service Road.Officials believe the sidewalks will make it safer for pedestrians walking to and from nearby schools and businesses. The Wright City R-II School District provided a letter of support to accompany the grant application.“The sidewalks will help with the ease of kids getting to school and off the roads,” said Karen Girondo, city treasurer/economic development director. “Again, it will interconnect other parts of the city. You will be able to start at Ruge Park and walk all the way to Bell Road on sidewalks.“We want the north side connected to the other side of town. It’s more pedestrian friendly and safer.”No timetable has been determined for when the project will begin, though Girondo hopes the sidewalks are built this year. She said easements need to be acquired and then the city can begin accepting bids for the work. The city has selected Cochran Engineering to design and assist in the project. The city will be responsible for 20 percent of the project, which amounts to $47,939. The total estimated cost is $239,699, according to Girondo.TAP provides federal funds through a competitive selection process for transportation-related activities and cannot be used for routine highway and bridge construction. The grants can be used for projects such as sidewalks, trails and bike lanes or landscaping.Grant recipient
