When: Friday, Oct. 9.Where: North Callaway High School.Time: 7 p.m.Coaches: Wright City — Jeff Sargent. North Callaway — Kevin O’Neal.Records: Wright City — 4-0 overall, 3-2 in EMO. North Callaway — 3-4 overall, 2-3 in EMO.Last year’s meeting: Wright City 22, North Callaway 18.Junior quarterback Kyle Tuepker had one of his better games of the season, scoring two touchdowns on the ground as the Wildcats earned their second and final win of the season. The Thunderbirds went ahead 12-8 in the second quarter, but Tyler Brittain returned the ensuing kickoff 76 yards to put Wright City ahead for good. Tuepker found an opening and burst 90 yards for the Wildcats’ final touchdown in the final quarter.Outlook: North Callaway is coming off an exhilarating win over Clopton-Elsberry that was decided in the final seconds last Friday and snapped a two-game losing streak in the process.Junior quarterback Milo Henry shoved his way across the goal line on fourth down with 6.4 seconds remaining to beat the IndianHawks 42-37. The Thunderbirds trailed 13-8 at halftime and fought back to lead 22-21 entering the final quarter.Henry drove North Callaway down the field on the final drive, aided by three straight compilations for 15, 16, and 28 yards. He missed on his first eight passes, but rebounded nicely to complete 11 of 21 passes for 194 yards. He also rushed for 51 yards on 20 carries. The Thunderbirds’ two other wins this season came against Montgomery County (43-0) and Tipton (22-8). Their losses were to Mexico (39-6), Bowling Green (22-10), Mark Twain (49-12) and South Callaway (20-12).Wright City broke a two-game skid last Friday in its convincing 44-18 win. Senior quarterback Andrew Pfuhl has thrown for 1,562 yards and 15 touchdowns in the season’s first seven games. Wide receivers Troy Muse and Tyler Brittain have been his favorite targets with 31 and 24 receptions, respectively. On the ground, senior DeRenzo Blanks has rushed for a team-high 765 yards and seven touchdowns.Defensively, senior linebacker Austin Buchheit broke the century mark and now has 104 tackles on the season. Kyle Tuepker and Trey Saddler follow with 87 and 53 stops, respectively.Bottom Line: Both teams enter Friday’s matchup with much momentum on both sides, but Wright City has two very winnable games on its schedule and appears ready to close out the conference schedule on a winning note. North Callaway likely doesn’t have the skill players to keep up with the Wildcats through four quarters. Following Friday’s road game, the Wildcats are back home Oct. 16 against Clopton-Elsberry.—By Tim Schmidt, Record Managing EditorWildcats
