A Warrenton woman who admitted to police to spanking her son in excess was sentenced to 120 days “shock time” in jail.Heather R. Baugh, 29, of the 2300 block of Donna Maria, pleaded guilty to felony child abuse May 6 as part of a deal reached with prosecutors. Circuit Judge Wes Dalton handed out a seven-year suspended sentence which Baugh could avoid if she successfully completes her “shock time.”Six calls to the state child abuse and neglect hotline were made between 2012 and 2013 regarding injuries the 3-year-old boy suffered, according to court documents.Warrenton police began investigating the alleged abuse Nov. 30, 2012, when the boy was discovered with several injuries, including severe bruises on his back, shoulder, face, ears, groin, chest and a small abrasion on his head. The boy was taken to SSM Cardinal Glennon’s Children’s Medical Center for evaluation, according to court records. On Dec. 1, 2012, Dr. Rachel Charney signed an affidavit stating she had probable cause to suspect abuse or neglect on the part of the boy’s parents, legal guardian, or caretakers, police stated.During the time period the child received his injuries, he was in the care and custody of Baugh, according to police.During an interview with police, Baugh admitted she was the only person to have care for the boy during the past two weeks when he had sustained the injuries in question. She also recalled spanking the boy with her hand on at least two occasion during the two-week period and stated she would at times spank the boy in excess, according to court records.Baugh also said an injury to the top of the child’s head could have happened when she allegedly hit him with a “sippy cup.” She also would intentionally run into the boy while he walked in the hallway, causing him to fall and hit door jambs.Heather Baugh
