Where: Warrenton High School. When: Friday, Oct. 2Time: 7 p.m.Coaches: Warrenton — Steve McDowell. Winfield — Keith McGlasson.Records: Warrenton — 3-3. Winfield — 3-3.Last Year’s Meeting: Warrenton 47, Winfield 6.The Warriors were able to regain their offensive identity during a GAC rout, racking up 300 yards and building a 40-0 lead by halftime. Warrenton implemented a hurry-up attack, inserting quarterback Braydan Chmiel in place of Ryan Bradshaw. The junior completed seven of 11 passes for 186 yards. The Warriors opened up a 21-0 advantage after one quarter, scoring more touchdowns during that stretch than they had in the previous three weeks combined.Five different players scored for Warrenton, with Alec Tonioli, Hunter Russell and Jacob Crump hauling in touchdown passes. Zach Logan led the ground game with 73 yards on 17 carries.Outlook: Winfield has exhibited an extremely balanced offense this season, relying on quarterback Damian Cagle for many of those yards. He has completed 88 of 149 passes for 1,164 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Cagle has also led the team with 737 yards and 12 touchdowns on 71 carries. Also posing a threat on the ground has been Collin Sutton with 712 yards and nine touchdowns on 55 touches. Cagle’s favorite target through the air has been Jake Freeman with 549 yards and seven touchdowns on 35 catches.Defensively, Winfield will operate out of a 4-3 or 4-4 front. Josh Davenport has been a leader on that side of the ball with a team-best 55 tackles. For Warrrenton, the primary concern is executing on offense and improved tackling.Chmiel has connected on 78 of 123 passes for 873 yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. Hunter Russell has twice as many receiving yards as any of his teammates, having gained 460, along with six touchdowns on 24 receptions.Cameron Richardson has led the rushing attack with 468 yards on 82 carries, while Chmiel has 221 yards on 58 keeps.Defensively, Jacob Abel has led the way with 61 tackles, while Jacob Null has 37 takedowns and a pair of sacks.Bottom Line: The Warriors are in desperate need of redirection, after seeing the holes in their defense exposed the past two weeks. The offense has proven its capability to move the ball but is still too inconsistent to complete drives. With opponents getting into the backfield, the Warriors have had few opportunities to break open big-yardage plays. They will need to convert on more vertical plays downfield and prevent Winfield from reaching the second layer of defense in order to come away victorious. Safeties have led Warrenton in tackles much of the season, which isn’t necessarily a positive sign for the team’s success.—By Derrick Forsythe, Record Staff WriterWarriors
