The Wright City Wildcats tied Tuesday night’s conference matchup with Bowling Green heading into halftime but ultimately fell to the Bobcats Tuesday night.
Wright City (4-19) fell to Bowling Green 53-37 in their home finale. Wright City beat Wellsville-Middletown 59-34 last week to win their fourth game of the season.
Wright City jumped out to an early lead in Tuesday night’s clash with Bowling Green. They led 7-4 in the opening quarter. Bowling Green outscored Wright City 17-5 at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter to take a 21-12 lead over the Wildcats. Wright City ended the second quarter on an 11-2 run to pull even with Bowling Green heading into halftime. Four Wildcats scored on the 11-2 run to end the half.
“I liked the way the guys came out in the first half,” Wright City boys basketball coach Ken Brown said. “We were knocking down shots. I thought ultimately, we started getting tired down the stretch. But for the most part, I’m really pleased with the effort in the first three quarters.”
Bowling Green ended the third quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 12-point lead into the final quarter. The Bobcats led the Wildcats by as many as 18 points in the final quarter. Brown said the Bobcats’ 1-2-2 trap and the Wildcats’ lack of success on the offensive end led to Wright City’s struggles at the end of the second half.
“They ran a 1-2-2 trap on us in the second half and we didn’t make adequate adjustments to it,” Brown said. “I think if we would have just made more shots and made more layups, we would have been fine. We had a spurt where we just couldn’t make shots and it just kind of put us down in a tailspin.
Despite the loss to Bowling Green, Brown is seeing the Wildcats make strides as they head into district tournament play next week.
“We’re starting to build some cohesiveness,” Brown said. “We’re starting to look good. We are a deep team. We’ve just got to play a tad bit better defensively and get more rebounds. We’re just so undersized the entire time.”
Wright City is the No. 6 seed in the Class 4, District 7 tournament and is scheduled to square off against Orchard Farm in the district quarterfinals. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. Monday. The winner of Monday’s quarterfinal matchup will face St. Charles West at 7 p.m. March 1 in the district semifinals. The district championship game is slated for 7 p.m. March 3. All Class 4, District 7 tournament games will be held at St. Charles West High School.
