Facing a six-run deficit in the fourth inning, the Wright City baseball team rallied with two big innings of their own but could not complete the comeback last Thursday.
The fourth-seeded Wildcats fell 7-6 to No. 5 Lutheran St. Charles in the Class 4, District 6 Tournament opener held at St. Charles West.
Entering the postseason on a seven-game winning streak, the Wildcats finished the year with an 8-8 record.
Wright City fell behind 6-0 in the top of the fourth inning before plating three runs in its bottom half of the frame. After the Cougars stretched the lead to 7-3 in the top of the sixth, the Wildcats once again scored three runs in the bottom portion of the inning.
Duan McRoberts led Wright City with two hits in four at-bats from the leadoff position. Zach Rodriguez, Jake Orf, Drew Elsenrath, Kolby Bass and McRoberts each drove in one run.
Micah Boeckman pitched the first 5 ⅔ innings for the Wildcats and suffered the loss. He gave up seven earned runs on 13 hits while striking out four and walking one. Elsenrath pitched a scoreless inning and Logan Rose recorded one out on the mound.
The Cougars (6-14) followed up with a 13-1 upset win over top seed Fulton in the semifinals Saturday. They were scheduled to face No. 3 seed Winfield in Tuesday’s district championship game.
