The Wright City track team had one individual and one relay team qualify for this weekend’s state meet.

Senior Elizabeth Riggs will be aiming to become a three-time state medalist in the 300-meter hurdles during the Class 3 state championships to be held Friday and Saturday at Jefferson City High School. She will also be competing on the 4x400 team with teammates Ada Ferrell, Lindsay Pettus and Lydia Clubb.

Preliminary races for both events will be held Friday, with the finals scheduled for Saturday.

Riggs placed third in the 300 hurdles in 47.50 seconds, following Effie Morris of Boonville (45.70) and Jersey Nelke of Winfield (45.90). Now she sets her sights on improving her finish from a year ago. As a junior, Riggs placed sixth in the event. In her sophomore year, she earned a third-place medal.

The 4x400 relay team smashed the school record at sectionals, placing second in 4 minutes, 12.10 seconds. Centralia won the race in 4:11.71.

The same foursome also competed in the 4x200 relay event, placing sixth in 1:50.51.

The Wildcats had two individuals who narrowly missed qualifying for state, as only the top four finishers in each event advanced to state.

Clubb finished fifth in the 200-meter dash in 27.76. She also placed sixth in the 100 in 12.86.

Kaedyn Johnson was fifth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 inches. She also was sixth in the pole vault (9-2.75).

Others who were competing for Wright City at sectionals were Emma Staats and Sadie Sehnert, who placed sixth and eighth, respectively, with throws of 102-6.75 and 96-9.50 in the javelin. Riggs also competed in the 100 hurdles and placed seventh (17.69).
