The Wright City football team’s season may have ended earlier than they had hoped for, but this year proved to be a record breaking season for the Wildcats, and multiple players received more postseason awards outside of
conference.
Senior running back Duan McRoberts had a breakout season and broke three school records and created a new one. McRoberts ended his final high school season with 33 touchdowns and 2,374 total yards (2,123 rushing and 251 receiving). He broke the program record for career yards with a total of 6,509. The school record for total touchdowns with 72 and seasonal record for yards per carry with an average of 10.8.
In addition, McRoberts is the only player in school history to have played three seasons with over 1,000 rushing yards each season. He also received first team all-district and first team all-state.
The team as a whole also made their mark in the program’s history books. For the first time in school history, Wright City had five wins or more for three consecutive seasons. They also set a new record for points scored per game with an average of 34.5 and rushing touchdowns with 44. The Wildcats only allowed six offensive turnovers this year, which is the fewest any team has had before.
Aside from records, many players were named to the all-district team and all-state team. Senior offensive lineman Mason Wendt earned first team all-district and second team all-state.
Senior Jakob Popp earned a first team all-district nod. Sophomore defensive back Benji Rodriguez was named to the first team all-district.
Kicker Kaleb McCory received first team district honors.
Offensive linemen Hunter Bohannan and Omar Ghannoum earned all district second team, while linebacker Gavin McCord received second team district honors.
The Wildcats accomplishments extended beyond the field as McRoberts, Rodriguez, Wendt, Karsten Uhl and Ayden Dile were all named to the all-state academic team.
