The Wright City boys basketball team is on a roll and it has no intention of stopping as they enter the postseason. After nearly 17 years of falling short in the first round of districts, the Wildcats are determined to break that drought.
“I know it’s a tough opponent but these schools are the same size as us, so at some point we have to break the mold and I think we have a good chance to do so,” Head Coach Ken Brown said.
The Wildcats were picked as the No. 5 seed in the Class 4, District 7 tournament. They will face No. 4 St. Charles West March 3 at 7 p.m.
A win over St. Charles West will advance the Wildcats to a semifinal game against top-seeded Orchard Farm.
Wright City had previously played the Warriors in their third game of the season, losing 60-27. St. Charles West also ended the Wildcat’s season the year prior.
“It’s not going to be easy to beat them on their home floor. They will have the crowd, the band and everything going for them so it’s going to be tough, but we look forward to the challenge,” Brown said.
The Wright City coach added that his team is completely different than it was two months ago when it faced St. Charles West.
“We changed up a lot of things dramatically and we’re more fluent on offense,” Brown said.
The Wildcats will take a 8-16 record into districts. They have won six of their last eight games.
Brown credits the strong play of Jersiah Higgins and an injury-free lineup for his team’s recent success.
“[Higgins] being on fire and having our post presence and our team back as a whole has really helped us be successful this far down the stretch,” he said.
To keep the momentum going in the postseason, consistent scoring and motivation will be crucial for the Wildcats. Brown emphasized the importance of showing the team what they’re capable of, rather than just telling them.
“When the kids feel like they’re in the game, you get better energy. We need to keep our thoughts up, our prayers up and our spirits up, and just showing them what they can do,” Brown said. “I know we can do it. We just have to be motivated to do it.”
