The Wright City football team traveled to Bowling Green for their third game of the season. While the score did not go their way in a 56-13 loss, Head Coach Tyler Rickard made one thing clear, “We don’t believe the score is indicative of
the way we played.”
The Wildcats played Bowling Green High School, a team that had made it to the Class 3 semifinals in the year prior. Coming into the game, Wright City wanted to be confident, tough and resilient.
“I think we showed that and surprised them a little bit with the way we, especially in the first half, were able to keep it relatively close there for the first two quarters,” Rickard said. “They scored with about eight seconds left in the first half to make it a three-score game at halftime, but we made them work.”
Rickard noted the team executed their game plan well at times, but were unable to consistently do it throughout the game.
Duan McRoberts scored the first touchdown on a 60-yard drive and in the second quarter, he did the same thing. Kaleb McCory made one extra point.
On defense, Ben Rodriguez and Gavin McCord led in solo tackles, with Rodriguez recording five solos and 10 assists and McCord with four solos and 11 assists.
McCord moved from outside linebacker to inside linebacker after team captain Quinn Schnarre suffered an ACL tear during last week’s game.
“He was one of the bright spots on defense and he really stepped up,” Rickard said. “That’s what you need when somebody goes down, is somebody to step up and we were all very proud of Gavin for the effort that he gave.”
After a tough loss, the Wildcats were disappointed, but remained encouraged.
“One thing that we told them is we don’t want to just take this as a moral victory and be complacent with the result,” Rickard said. “Our goal is to be able to play with, compete and beat teams at Bowling Green’s level.”
Wright City will be on the road once again to take on Louisiana for a conference game this Friday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
“We came in this morning [Monday] and our guys seemed fired up and ready to go,” Rickard said. “This can be another good opportunity for us to take on a good EMO team and try to right the ship and get one back.”
