Wildcat Duo Earns All-State Honors

The rewards of a successful spring extended beyond the season finale for the Wright City baseball team.The Wildcats had two players named to the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association All-State teams following a 13-8 campaign.Senior Austin Meine earned all-state honors for a second straight season, being recognized as a second-team utility player.As the Wildcats’ starting pitcher, he carried a 1.06 ERA through 53 innings of work. Meine struck out 72 batters and walked 15, while giving up 35 hits.Equally as dangerous at the plate, he batted a team-best .458 with 27 hits, 25 RBIs and 22 runs scored.“It’s a combination of both his hitting and pitching skills,” said Coach Dave Chapman. “It put him in a unique category.”Senior Tyler Tuepker earned honorable mention as a utility player, after finishing second to Meine in several categories.He went 4-1 as a starter, sporting a .45 ERA through 31 innings. Tuepker whiffed 39 batters, walking 14 and giving up 12 hits.He batted .397 with 27 hits, 13 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He was a team-leader with 19 stolen bases.“He really fit that utility role because of the way he played defense and shortstop,” said Chapman. “He was a top 15 selection in the state as far as utility players.”It was a unique feat for the program, which made its first state championship appearance since the 2006 season.“Austin and Tyler both were the cornerstones for our team,” said Chapman. “Those were pretty big honors for our program, and those two guys were key to our success.”Both were also named first-team Eastern Missouri All-Conference and all-district selections.Wright City had two additional players receive postseason honors.Senior Carlos Quiles was chosen as a second-team infielder in the EMO, after pitching and playing second base.He went 1-2 through 20 innings as a starter on the mound. Quiles batted .375 with 24 hits, 12 RBIs and 18 runs scored. He also added 11 stolen bases.“He was a tablesetter for us in terms of offense,” said Chapman. “He batted lead-off every game, and when he got on base great things happened. He was instrumental in a lot of rallies.”Finally, freshman Donovan Mozee earned all-district honors after an outstanding showing at the plate during the final week of the season. He batted .346 with 18 hits, including a team-best three home runs. Mozee collected 18 hits and had 17 RBIs.“Being a freshman, he wasn’t intimidated at all,” said Chapman. “During the last five or six games, he really came on. He was one of the reasons our team took off and put together a winning streak.”
