Where: Wright City High School. When: Friday, Oct. 30.Time: 7 p.m.Coaches: Christian — Andy Hare. Wright City — Jeff Sargent.Records: Christian — 5-5. Wright City — 7-3.Last Year’s Meeting: Christian 50, Wright City 12.Up against a more physical front line, the Wildcats gradually gave way to their aggressive opponent. Christian racked up 514 yards, but an offensive first half allowed Wright City to hang around for a while. Quarterback Kyle Tuepker scored on a 65-yard kickoff return before adding a 1-yard touchdown run to pull the Wildcats to within 22-12. Christian went on to score three more times before halftime, pulling away and not scoring on a play of fewer than 21 yards.Eagles quarterback D.T. Christiansen finished eight of 13, throwing for 215 yards and four touchdowns. He tossed touchdown passes of 25, 54, 46 and 20 yards.Outlook: A much-improved Wright City team has a chance at avenging an embarrassing loss that concluded a 2-8 season last fall. This time the Wildcats will be privileged to host the second-round district game.Sargent has witnessed his team improve its play each week, cutting down on mistakes and penalties since last losing 44-42 to Mark Twain in Week 6.Quarterback Andrew Pfuhl has racked up 2,120 passing yards on 120 of 221 completions with 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. His top target has been Troy Muse, with 997 yards on 51 catches, while Tyler Brittian has added 571 yards on 27 receptions. In a balanced effort, running back DeRenzo Blanks has amassed 1,202 yards on 179 carries.Defensively, Austin Buchheit continues to lead the way with 189 tackles and five sacks, while Tuepker has 125 takedowns and eight sacks.Christian defeated Macon 26-16 in the first round, bouncing back from consecutive losses in conference play. The Eagles have two common opponents. They beat Orchard Farm 34-24, while Wright City lost to the same team 14-12. Christian fell to Trinity 46-20, while the Wildcats won that matchup 20-18 in Week 1.Christiansen is back in the quarterback role, having completed 141 of 261 passes for 1,758 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also is the leading rusher with 723 yards on 195 carries. Sargent says the Eagles employ a spread offense that sets out four receivers every time. They have five receivers with at least 16 catches and 233 yards, led by Ryan Norwine with 498 yards on 38 receptions.Defensively, the Eagles operate out of a 3-4 set. Tyler Rodriguez has paved the way with 101 tackles and four sacks.Bottom Line: This is a favorable matchup for the Wildcats, who seem to be playing at a high level and with confidence at the right time. Offensively, they have established the ability to strike quickly and create big plays with the presence of Muse and Blanks providing a balanced combination. After coming off their first district victory in five seasons, the Wildcats are eager to extend their campaign for a shot at the winner of Centralia and Orchard Farm.—By Derrick Forsythe, Record Staff WriterWildcats
