Warriors work on gaining groove before postseason, take fourth at St. Clair Tourament

ST. CLAIR - There ain’t no rest for the Warriors.

Or at least there hasn’t been lately, not with districts on the horizon.

And while wins don’t grow on trees, an extremely busy slate of seven games across four days has offered ample opportunities to earn them.

More often than not, the Warriors have taken advantage. Battling illnesses and injuries, Coach Randy Kindschuh’s squad finished 2-2-1 to nab fourth place last weekend at the St. Clair Tournament, which the host Bulldogs won.

Warrenton’s road odyssey continued with a three-set win over Mexico Monday, before falling in two at GAC North rival St. Charles Tuesday.

ST. CLAIR WRAP

GAME 1: WARRENTON OVER UNION, 25-19, 25-23

Ella Smith had six kills and Josey Schipper five, while adding five service points with three aces.

Alyssa Bruce posted a 2.42 pass rate.

Abby Hammerberg had 16 assists.

GAME 2: ST. CLAIR OVER WARRENTON, 19-25, 18-25

Smith had five kills.

Bruce had an outstanding game passing at 2.80, while adding six service points and an ace.

Hammerberg had seven assists.

GAME 3: TIE WITH CUBA, 25-22, 23-25

Smith had eight kills.

Bruce passed at a 2.63 rate.

Hammerberg had 11 assists, four service points and two aces.

Tiffany Meine and Kate Kilpatrick each had four service points.

“We didn’t play that well in this one and Abby Hammerberg was out for much of one set with an injury,” Kindschuh said. “Sophomore Dana Pruitt got her first varsity experience, was thrust into the setting role and did a nice job.”

GAME 4: WARRENTON OVER ST. JAMES,

25-22, 26-24

Smith had eight kills and Ashley Pullen five.

Bruce had a 2.63 passing rating, eight service points and six aces.

Hammerberg returned from injury and had 15 assists.

“We had to come from behind late in each set and were able to pull out the win,” Kindschuh said.

GAME 5: ST. CLAIR OVER WARRENTON,

19-25, 16-25

Smith had five kills and led with a 2.33 passing rate.

Hammerberg had 16 assists.

Kate Kilpatrick had four service points and two aces.

“St. Clair had too much for us to handle,” Kindschuh said. “We didn’t have much of a block and they hammered away at us at will.”

FINAL TOURNEY THOUGHTS:

“We played the whole tournament without Morgan Frye, who was out sick, and did a good job of rallying around not having her there to lead us,” Kindschuh said. “Sophomores Ella Smith (32 kills) and Josey Schipper (20 kills) picked up the offensive slack and Tiffany Meine did a great job of serving and playing defense in Morgan’s absence. Josey was also our representative on the all-tournament team.”

WARRENTON OVER MEXICO,

27-25, 21-25, 25-11

Frye and Schipper had five kills each.

Meine was the passing leader at 2.20.

Hammerberg had 19 set assists with 11 service points and five aces.

Bruce had 12 points and eight aces, with seven of the latter coming in the third game.

“We were flat passing the ball,” Kindschuh said. “Because of that we couldn’t get our offense on track. Our serve game is what won it for us. We had 20 ace serves and many other serves that got (Mexico) out of its system.”

ST. CHARLES OVER WARRENTON,

18-25, 18-25

Kilpatrick had four service points and Bruce two aces.

Frye had seven kills, and Pullen and Schipper four apiece.

Hammerberg had 15 assists and Jazzy McCuskey two blocks.

Following the St. Charles setback, Warrenton is 14-12-2 overall with a 3-4 GAC North mark.

The Warriors have three games remaining before districts. They host Union Monday before their home and GAC North finale against Winfield Tuesday. They visit Sullivan to conclude the regular season next Thursday, Oct. 24.

Warrenton sophomore Josey Schipper was selected to the all-tournament team at St. Clair last Saturday.
